MONSIGNOR CORMAC BURKE

Msgr. Cormac Burke, the first Chaplain of Strathmore School, peacefully departed this life into God’s presence on Monday, 22nd November 2021, surrounded by his spiritual family.

Son of the late Patrick and Nora Burke from Sligo, Ireland. Brother to Colman, Desmond and Maire (all deceased), and Honoria (Teddy) of Dublin, Ireland. Msgr. Burke will be dearly missed by his family in Ireland, the Regional Vicar and the faithful and co-operators of Opus Dei in Kenya and in all the other countries where he served, and all who knew and loved him so much.

Msgr. Burke arrived in Kenya in 1977, and served as the Chaplain of Strathmore School until 1986 when he was appointed judge of the Rota (High Court of the Catholic Church) in Rome where he served from 1986 to 1999. After his retirement from the Rota, he returned to Kenya and spent the rest of his life in the pastoral care of the students at Strathmore School. Msgr. Burke also taught at St Thomas Aquinas Seminary, lectured locally and globally on Canon Law, was a prolific writer on marriage and the family, and gave numerous retreats to thousands of people.

A requiem Mass to pray for the repose of his soul will be held at Holy Family Basilica on Tuesday, 30th November 2021, at 10:00am, followed by interment at the Lang’ata Cemetery.
