PROF NORBERT OPIYO AKECH

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing on of Professor Norbert Opiyo Akech, which occurred on the 16th of February 2022 in Ahmedabad, India.

Prof. Opiyo Akech was born to Mama Gaudensia Aketch and the late Francis Aketch.

Brother to Pauline, the late Teresa, Syprose, Cornel, John, Pamela, Mary, Magdaline, George Elisha, the late Joe Aketch, Roseline and Nicholas Aketch.

Loving husband to Pamela (Isabelle) Opiyo; father to Francis, Jean, Michael,Allan and Alex Opiyo. Son in law to the late Hanningtone and Sabina Osano. Grandfather to Zoey, Jamal and Isabella-Marie.

He was a distinguished geologist, a remarkable family man and a loyal friend to many.

He was a long-serving professor at the UoN and was recognised as one of the transformational deans of the Faculty of Science.

At the time of his death, he was heading the department of Physics and Earth Sciences at TUK and was also a board member of KIWASCO.

He was a gold member of the Geological Society of Kenya, Geological Society of Africa, and Kenya National Academy of Sciences, an integral member of CTBTO, among other international accolades.

The main fund-raising event is scheduled for Thursday, the 3rd of March 2022 at the United Kenya Club (UKC), from 5.00pm.

A subsequent fund-raising will be held on Saturday, the 5th of March 2022 from 2pm at the Kisumo — Kamenya family home.

A requiem mass will be held on Thursday the 10th of March 2022, at 11.00am at St. Paul’s Catholic Chapel, in Nairobi.

On the 11th of March 2022, a final requiem mass will be held at Obambo Parish in Kisumu at 12.00pm.

The burial will take place at the Kisumo — Kamenya family home on Saturday the 12th of March 2022.

We mourn the passing of a great man.

He left behind a powerful legacy of humility, humour, unity and simplicity!
